Letting Go of Fear and Worry, and Anchoring in Safety - Tia’s Retreat Journey
Oct 20, 2026
Fear and worry can look “normal” from the outside. A busy mind. A body that’s always braced. A constant scanning for what might go wrong. But on the inside, it can feel like you never fully land. You never fully exhale. And over time, that state of internal pressure can shape your health, your relationships, and your capacity to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build.
In Podcast Episode 184, Chris and Filly from Chris and Filly Functional Medicine are joined by Tia Duck from TDK Creative, who attended their first retreat, The Body Knows. Tia was also the retreat photographer — the one behind those “oohhh and ahhh” moments you’ve probably seen across social media and emails. But this conversation isn’t really about photography. It’s about what happens when someone arrives carrying fear, worry and apprehension… and leaves anchored in safety.
Stories like Tia’s are what Chris and Filly call “evidence collecting”. Evidence that healing is possible. Evidence that your nervous system can change. Evidence that burnout functional medicine isn’t just about supplements and protocols — it’s about coming home to yourself, and creating the internal conditions for natural healing.
When Fear and Worry Become a Health Pattern (Not Just a Personality Trait)
A lot of people assume fear and worry are simply “how I am”. They label themselves as anxious, high-strung, sensitive, overthinkers. But from a mind body medicine lens, fear and worry are often nervous system strategies — protective patterns that once made sense.
When your brain and body have learned that the world isn’t safe (or that you have to stay switched on to cope), worry becomes a form of control. It’s your system trying to prevent pain, prevent failure, prevent rejection, prevent the next crisis.
The trouble is, living in that state has a cost.
In holistic health and integrative medicine, chronic worry is not just a mental experience. It can be a whole body health issue. It can impact:
- sleep quality and recovery
- digestion and gut function
- inflammation and immune resilience
- hormones and energy production
- mood, motivation and libido
- your ability to feel present and connected
This is why the work Chris and Filly do at Chris and Filly Functional Medicine is so powerful. It’s not “either” physical or emotional. It’s both. It’s root cause medicine that looks at the biology and the deeper patterns driving the biology.
Tia’s Story: From Severe Burnout to Choosing Herself
Tia shares that she has lived through a past health crisis with severe burnout — including ending up in hospital with a 50/50 chance of surviving.
That kind of experience changes you. Even if you “recover”, your body remembers. Your nervous system remembers. Your mind can keep replaying the possibility of danger, even when life looks fine on paper.
This is a key point for anyone on a wellness journey: sometimes the symptoms you’re dealing with now aren’t just about what’s happening today. They’re about what your system learned back then.
From a preventative health perspective, it makes complete sense that Tia’s heart, body and mind would call her towards something deeper. Not another quick fix. Not another “just push through”. But a space where safety could be rebuilt from the inside out.
Why Retreats Can Create a Different Kind of Healing
Tia talks about why she felt pulled to join the retreat — and what it meant to choose herself and lean in.
That phrase matters: choose herself.
Because for many high-functioning people, self-care becomes another task. Another thing to do “right”. Another box to tick. But choosing yourself is different. It’s a decision to stop abandoning your own needs. It’s a decision to stop waiting until you’re falling apart to take yourself seriously.
Retreat work can support health optimisation in a way that everyday life often can’t, because it removes you from the noise. It gives you space. It gives you reflection. It gives you co-regulation — the nervous system settling that can happen when you’re around safe people, in a safe environment, with skilled facilitation.
And that’s exactly what Tia describes: arriving with fear, worry and apprehension, and finding deep safety within the group, the land, and the inner parts of herself.
Meeting Your Inner Parts: The Missing Link in Healing Naturally
One of the biggest breakthroughs Tia shares is meeting her inner parts, releasing fear and worry, and noticing that her brain isn’t worrying incessantly anymore.
That’s not a small change. That’s life-changing.
In alternative medicine and holistic wellness spaces, people often talk about “mindset”. But mindset can be too shallow when your nervous system is still in survival. You can think positive thoughts all day and still feel unsafe in your body.
Inner parts work (in different forms) helps you relate to the protective parts of you with compassion, not force. It’s a way of doing healing from within that doesn’t shame you for having patterns — it understands that patterns are protection.
When you stop fighting yourself, your body often stops fighting too.
This is also why burnout functional medicine needs to include nervous system work. If your system is constantly braced, you can do all the functional nutrition strategies in the world and still feel like you’re pushing a boulder uphill.
The Role of Landscape, Nature and “Space” in Nervous System Safety
Tia also shares how the landscape and the transformational work created a life-changing experience, and how she’s now finding more space to enjoy nature in her own home and carve out time for herself.
This is such a practical takeaway. It’s not just about what happened at the retreat — it’s about what she brought home.
Nature is not a luxury. It’s a nervous system nutrient.
From a health and wellness perspective, time in nature can support:
- downregulation (moving out of fight/flight)
- improved sleep rhythms
- reduced stress hormones over time
- a greater sense of presence and grounding
- emotional processing and clarity
And importantly, it’s accessible. You don’t need a perfect life to start. You need small, consistent moments that tell your body: “You’re safe now.”
Where This Fits in Root Cause Medicine and the Ending Body Burnout Method
Tia’s story is a beautiful example of what Chris and Filly do best at Chris and Filly Functional Medicine: combining integrative medicine, holistic health, mind body medicine, and personalised medicine so you’re not just managing symptoms — you’re changing the patterns underneath them.
This is also the heart of the Ending Body Burnout Method: addressing the physical side (like stress physiology, gut health, hormones, inflammation, functional nutrition) alongside the deeper subconscious patterns that keep the body stuck in survival.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “I don’t want to live with a worried brain forever”… you don’t have to. Your nervous system can learn safety. Your body can learn trust. Healing naturally becomes possible when you stop treating symptoms as the enemy and start listening for the message underneath.
