Why Ignoring Your Intuition Causes Body Burnout
Sep 29, 2026
What if body burnout isn’t only about doing too much… but about overriding yourself for so long that your body eventually has to yell to be heard?
So many people on a wellness journey are doing the “right” things — eating well, taking supplements, trying to sleep, going for walks, doing mindset work — yet they still feel flat, anxious, inflamed, foggy, or stuck in that wired-but-tired state. And often, underneath all of it, there’s a quieter pattern: you’ve become really, really good at not listening to yourself.
In Episode 181, Chris and Filly from Chris and Filly Functional Medicine explore the connection between intuition, the brain, and Ending Body Burnout — and why learning to listen to yourself is a key part of healing. Not as a vague spiritual concept, but as a practical, body-based skill that supports nervous system regulation, whole body health, and natural healing.
What We Actually Mean by “Intuition” (and Why It’s Not the Same as Anxiety)
Let’s clear something up straight away. When Chris and Filly talk about intuition, they’re not talking about a dramatic “download from the universe” moment. They’re talking about the quiet, steady inner knowing that tends to feel simple and clean in the body.
Intuition often sounds like:
- “That’s a no for me.”
- “I need to slow down.”
- “This doesn’t feel right.”
- “I’m pushing too hard.”
- “I need support.”
- “I’m not okay.”
Anxiety, on the other hand, tends to feel urgent, loud, spirally, and catastrophic. Anxiety says, “What if everything goes wrong?” Intuition says, “This isn’t aligned.”
From a mind body medicine perspective, this distinction matters. Anxiety is often a nervous system state. Intuition is often a signal that becomes clearer when the nervous system is regulated.
That’s why burnout functional medicine and holistic health approaches are so helpful here: when your body is in survival mode, it can be harder to hear your own knowing. Everything feels like noise. Everything feels like danger. Everything feels like pressure.
How We Learn to Override Our Own Knowing
Chris and Filly talk about how we learn to override ourselves — and it usually starts early.
Many of us were rewarded for being easy, helpful, high-achieving, and low-needs. We learned that:
- rest is lazy
- emotions are inconvenient
- saying no is selfish
- pushing through is admirable
- your body is something to control
- intuition is “dramatic” or “irrational”
Over time, overriding becomes normal. You stop noticing the signals. Or you notice them, but you dismiss them.
This is one reason why people can end up stuck in Ending Body Burnout patterns for years. It’s not that they don’t care about their health and wellness. It’s that they’ve trained themselves to ignore the very data that would guide them back to safety.
In root cause medicine, this is a big deal. Because the root cause isn’t always a nutrient deficiency or a gut infection (though those can matter). Sometimes the root cause is a pattern of self-abandonment that keeps the nervous system switched on.
The Everyday Ways We Disconnect From What Our Body Is Telling Us
One of the most helpful parts of this episode is how practical it is. Chris and Filly talk about the everyday ways we disconnect from what our body is telling us.
It can look like:
Saying yes when your body says no
You agree to the meeting, the event, the favour, the extra work — even though your chest tightens or your stomach drops.
Pushing through fatigue
You tell yourself you’ll rest later. You keep going. You override the need for recovery.
Ignoring hunger, thirst, and basic needs
You skip meals, eat standing up, forget water, and then wonder why your mood and energy crash.
Staying busy to avoid feeling
You fill every gap with tasks, scrolling, or noise because stillness feels uncomfortable.
Overthinking instead of sensing
You try to “logic” your way into clarity, rather than dropping into the body and noticing what’s true.
From a holistic wellness perspective, these aren’t just habits. They’re nervous system strategies. They’re ways your system has learned to stay in control, stay safe, and avoid discomfort.
But the cost is disconnection.
Why Repeatedly Overriding Yourself Becomes a Brain/Body Pattern
Chris and Filly explain that repeatedly overriding yourself can become a deeply ingrained brain/body pattern.
This is where integrative medicine meets neuroscience. Your brain learns through repetition. If you repeatedly ignore your body’s signals, your brain learns: “Those signals don’t matter.” Your nervous system learns: “We can’t rely on internal cues.”
Then, when your body tries to speak up, it has to speak louder.
That’s often how symptoms escalate:
- mild fatigue becomes chronic fatigue
- occasional anxiety becomes daily anxiety
- light sleep becomes insomnia
- “a bit of gut weirdness” becomes persistent digestive issues
- tension becomes headaches or migraines
- low mood becomes depression or shutdown
This doesn’t mean symptoms are your fault. It means your body is adaptive. It will do what it needs to do to get your attention and keep you safe.
In burnout functional medicine, we often say: symptoms are signals, not flaws.
Why Slowing Down and Creating Space Helps You Hear Yourself Again
If overriding is the pattern, space is the antidote.
Chris and Filly talk about why slowing down and creating space can help you hear yourself again. Because intuition is often quiet. It doesn’t compete well with constant stimulation.
Space can look like:
- a walk without a podcast
- a few minutes of breathing before checking your phone
- journalling without trying to “fix” anything
- sitting in nature and letting your body settle
- turning down the noise so you can notice what you feel
This is also why retreats can be so powerful for healing naturally: they remove you from the environment that reinforces your old patterns and give your nervous system a chance to reset.
If you’re craving that kind of reset, you can join Heart Meets Land Retreat — and book by 12 Oct to save $100 (limited spaces available).
Why Listening to Your Intuition Is Only Part of the Process
This is a big point in the episode: listening to your intuition is only part of the process. The other part is rewiring the old patterns that make it hard to follow through.
Because many people do know. They know they need to slow down. They know they need boundaries. They know they’re overgiving. They know their body is asking for something different.
But knowing isn’t the same as changing.
If your nervous system is wired to equate rest with danger, you’ll keep overriding. If your system is wired to equate saying no with rejection, you’ll keep people-pleasing. If your system is wired to equate worth with productivity, you’ll keep pushing.
That’s why rewiring matters. It’s not about willpower. It’s about creating safety in the body so you can actually live what you know.
This is the heart of the work inside the Ending Body Burnout Method: combining root cause medicine, functional nutrition, holistic health, and mind body medicine so you can heal from within — not just cope.
Where in Your Life Are You Already Knowing… But Not Listening?
Chris and Filly end with a powerful question: where in your life are you already knowing… but not listening?
It might be:
- your workload is too much
- your relationship needs honesty
- your body needs rest
- your boundaries need strengthening
- your healing plan needs to be simpler
- you need support instead of doing it alone
- you’re ready for a new season, but you’re scared
If this question stirs something, that’s not a problem. That’s information. That’s your intuition tapping you on the shoulder.
