How Our Client Mel Rewired Fatigue, Anxiety & Depression & Now Living Her Best Life
Jun 09, 2026
There’s a particular kind of fear that hits when your body stops doing what it used to do. You’re still you. Your life might look “fine” from the outside. But inside, your energy collapses, your mood feels unfamiliar, your gut and immunity start acting up, and anxiety becomes the loudest voice in the room. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why can’t I just push through like I used to?”, Mel’s story is going to land.
In Podcast Episode 168, Chris and Filly from Chris and Filly Functional Medicine sit down with Mel, one of their Ending Body Burnout Method clients. Three years ago, Mel experienced a huge crash in her energy, mental health, immunity and gut during perimenopause, after many years of pushing herself. At her worst, she was hospitalised for severe anxiety and depression. And now — she’s living her best life. Travelling. Adventuring. Enjoying her days. Surrendering into being, instead of forcing her way through life.
This is one of those “evidence collecting” episodes. Not because it’s a highlight reel. But because it shows what’s possible when you stop chasing band-aids and start addressing the real root causes — physically, emotionally, and at the level of your nervous system and identity.
When Perimenopause Becomes the Crash (After Years of Pushing Through)
Mel shares how perimenopause stopped her in her tracks after years of pushing through and burnout. That’s a pattern we see often in burnout functional medicine: perimenopause doesn’t always create the problem, but it can reveal it.
Perimenopause is a major transition. Hormones are shifting, sleep can change, stress tolerance can drop, and the body’s capacity to “keep up” can suddenly feel smaller. If you’ve been running on adrenaline for years, perimenopause can be the season where your body finally says, “Enough.”
From a holistic health perspective, this makes sense. Your body isn’t a machine. It’s a system. And when the system has been under chronic load — emotional, physical, relational, mental — it eventually needs a new way of operating.
This is why integrative medicine and root cause medicine matter so much in this season. Because if you only focus on surface symptoms, you can miss the bigger story: the stress physiology, the nervous system, the gut-brain connection, and the deeper patterns that keep you stuck in survival mode.
“I Tried Everything”: The Symptom Management Loop Many People Get Stuck In
Mel talks about all the things she tried: candida and low-carb diets, supplements, hypnosis, NLP, psychology therapy sessions, gut healing protocols, and medications. Some of these things helped with symptom management, but she was still struggling daily.
That line is so important for anyone on a WellnessJourney. Because symptom management can be helpful — it can keep you afloat — but it doesn’t always change the pattern that created the symptoms.
In health and wellness spaces, it’s easy to end up in a cycle of:
- trying the next protocol
- restricting harder
- spending more money
- adding more supplements
- searching for the “missing piece”
- feeling better briefly… then crashing again
And when you’ve been doing that for a while, it can start to feel like your body is the enemy. Like you’re failing. Like you’re too complicated to heal.
But often, what’s really happening is that your system is overloaded, and the approach is missing the whole-body picture.
When Healing Itself Becomes Another Form of Burnout
One of the most relatable parts of Mel’s story is that she burned herself out trying to heal previously.
This is so common, especially for high achievers. Healing becomes another project. Another thing to do perfectly. Another area where you need to prove you’re doing it “right”.
From a mind body medicine lens, that pressure is not neutral. Pressure is a nervous system state. If your healing plan keeps you in control, urgency, and fear, your body can’t fully settle into repair.
This is where the Ending Body Burnout Method approach is different. Mel shares that it allowed her to heal at her own pace, while rewiring the burnout patterns that were driving her symptoms.
That’s personalised medicine in action. Not just “here’s what to do”, but “here’s how to do it in a way your nervous system can actually integrate.”
The Relief of “No More Lab Testing”
Mel describes the relief when Filly said: no more lab testing.
That might sound surprising in a functional nutrition world, because testing can be incredibly helpful. But it’s also a reminder that more data isn’t always the answer. Sometimes, more testing keeps you in the identity of “the person who is broken and needs fixing”.
In holistic wellness, there’s a time for investigation and a time for rebuilding. A time for doing and a time for integrating.
For Mel, simplifying was regulating. It reduced the pressure. It helped her stop scanning for what was wrong and start focusing on what was needed: safety, pacing, and deeper root-cause healing.
The Root-Root Cause: “I’m Weak and Unlovable”
This is where the episode goes deep. Mel shares that they got to the root-root cause of her body burnout: the belief that she was weak and unlovable, stemming from childhood. That belief had led to trying to prove herself and push through all her life.
This is the part that so many people miss when they’re stuck in chronic symptoms. Because you can change your diet, your supplements, and your routines — but if your unconscious mind is still running a “prove yourself” programme, your body will stay braced.
If you believe you’re weak, you’ll overcompensate.
If you believe you’re unlovable, you’ll perform for love.
If you believe rest is unsafe, you’ll keep going.
And over time, that becomes physiology.
This is why root cause medicine isn’t just about gut health or hormones. It’s also about the beliefs and patterns that keep your nervous system in survival mode. It’s about healing from within, not just managing symptoms.
Learning How to BE: The Skill That Changes Everything
Mel shares that learning how to BE was a huge part of her healing.
This is one of those things that sounds simple until you try it. Being can feel terrifying if your nervous system has learned that worth comes from doing.
Being might look like:
- resting before you crash
- letting your body set the pace
- eating to nourish, not to control
- saying no without guilt
- allowing support
- feeling emotions without fixing them
- choosing gentleness over pressure
In preventative health and health optimisation, being is not laziness. It’s regulation. It’s the state where your body can finally switch from survival mode into repair mode.
And when your system learns that it’s safe to be, your symptoms often start to shift.
When Anxiety Comes Back: Why You Can Return Stronger Every Time
Mel also shares that anxiety came back with vengeance after periods of feeling well — and yet she came back feeling stronger every time.
That’s such an important reframe. Healing isn’t always linear. A flare doesn’t mean failure. A hard week doesn’t mean you’re back at the start.
In mind body medicine, we often see this as layers. Each time anxiety returns, you have more tools, more awareness, and more self-trust. Your nervous system learns, “I can handle this. I can come back. I’m not powerless.”
That’s how rewiring happens. Through repetition, evidence, and embodied safety.
The Outcome: Freedom, Adventures, and a Life That Feels Like Yours Again
Now, Mel’s everyday life looks completely different. She has freedom and enjoyment. She’s travelling and having adventures. Anxiety and fatigue no longer rule her.
That’s not just symptom relief. That’s whole body health. That’s holistic wellness. That’s what can happen when you stop trying to force your body into compliance and start working with it — physically, emotionally, and neurologically.
And that’s why these “evidence collecting” stories matter. They give your brain new reference points. They help your nervous system believe: “This is possible for me too.”
