You’re Not Broken

Jul 28, 2026

Before we dive deep into this transformative topic, we highly encourage you to listen to the full episode of our podcast, "172. You’re Not Broken," to hear the complete discussion.

Have you ever looked in the mirror, felt the exhaustion deep in your bones, and thought to yourself, “What is wrong with me?” If you are navigating chronic fatigue, brain fog, hormonal imbalances, or relentless stress, it is incredibly easy to feel like your body has betrayed you. Modern culture, and often even well-meaning practitioners, can accidentally reinforce the idea that you need to be “fixed,” “medicated,” or “managed.”

This language is sneaky and deeply disempowering. It implies that you are faulty. But what if you are not broken at all? What if your body is actually functioning perfectly, even in the midst of severe burnout? Here at Chris and Filly Functional Medicine, we believe that changing your perspective on your symptoms is the first and most crucial step toward true vitality.

The Flawed Narrative of the "Broken" Body

When you are on a WellnessJourney, it is easy to consume media and medical advice that treats your body like a broken down car in need of a mechanic. The conventional approach often focuses on suppressing symptoms rather than understanding them. But if your heart resonates with our style of holistic Root Cause Medicine, you are probably done with band-aid approaches. You do not want to just manage your symptoms; you want to resolve them.

The “something is wrong with me” narrative is one of the biggest roadblocks to Healing Naturally. When you believe you are faulty, you operate from a place of fear and frustration. This keeps your nervous system in a sympathetic, fight-or-flight state, which ironically drains more of your energy and exacerbates burnout. Embracing Mind Body Medicine means recognising that your thoughts and beliefs directly impact your physical biology. To achieve true Health And Wellness, we must first address the foundational belief that your body is making mistakes. It is not.

A Foundational Shift in Integrative Medicine

Inside our Ending Body Burnout Method program, one of the first foundational lessons Chris teaches is a concept we call "You're Not Broken." When you can finally land this belief in your nervous system, you will start to see why you do what you do, why you have ended up where you are, and what needs to shift so you can create real change at the deepest level.

Whole Body Health requires us to view our physical and emotional behaviours through a completely different lens. Instead of asking, "How do I turn off this symptom?", Burnout Functional Medicine asks, "What is this symptom trying to communicate?"

Every Behaviour and Symptom Has a Positive Intention

This might sound confronting at first, but it is a core presupposition in our work: you only do what works. Anything you tolerate, complain about, or struggle with—but do not actively change—must be giving you some sort of hidden payoff.

In the realm of Alternative Medicine and deep psychological healing, we understand that every behaviour, habit, and even physical symptom is meeting a need. Every strategy your body or mind employs has a positive intention behind it, even if it is showing up in a way that feels incredibly "wonky" or detrimental to your conscious goals.

Reframing Symptoms in Naturopathic Medicine

Consider the person who constantly overworks and then crashes into severe burnout. The conscious mind hates the exhaustion, but the subconscious mind might be using the overwork to gain a sense of worthiness, or using the inevitable "crash" as the only socially acceptable way to finally rest.

When we explore Healing From Within, we have to look at these hidden payoffs. Your physical ailments might be forcing you to slow down, protecting you from taking risks that feel unsafe, or keeping you small so you do not have to face the fear of failure. Sickness, holding onto excess weight, or chronic pain can often be a highly intelligent form of protection from what you are most afraid of.

Self-Protection is an Act of Self-Love

Understanding this is the gateway to Holistic Health. When you realise that your body's perceived "failures" are actually desperate attempts to keep you safe, you can shift from self-hatred to self-compassion. This form of self-protection is, at its core, an act of self-love.

Your body loves you so much that it is willing to sacrifice your short-term comfort to protect you from perceived emotional or physical threats. This reframe creates massive compassion and opens the door to lasting change. It is the cornerstone of Preventative Health; when you feel safe, your body no longer needs to generate symptoms to protect you.

Health is Your Body’s Default State

One of the most beautiful aspects of Natural Healing and Holistic Wellness is the foundational belief that your body craves health. Health is the default. If you cut your finger, you do not have to consciously instruct your cells to coagulate the blood, form a scab, and generate new skin. Your body does it automatically.

The same applies to Ending Body Burnout. Your body wants to be energetic, balanced, and vibrant. If it is not, it simply means there are interferences in the way—be they physical toxins, nutritional deficiencies, or emotional trauma. The goal of Personalised Medicine and Health Optimisation is to remove these interferences so the body can return to its natural, default state of wellness.

Understanding Your Needs: The 6 Core Human Needs

To truly engage in Functional Nutrition and emotional healing, we can use Tony Robbins’ 6 Core Needs as a simple but profound diagnostic tool. We all have these six needs, but we value them in different orders and meet them in different ways—some resourceful, and some very unresourceful.

  1. Certainty: The need to feel safe, secure, and comfortable.

  2. Variety: The need for surprises, challenges, and excitement.

  3. Significance: The need to feel important, special, and needed.

  4. Love/Connection: The need for deep bonding and feeling connected to others.

  5. Growth: The need to expand, learn, and evolve.

  6. Contribution: The need to give back and focus on things beyond oneself.

When looking through the lens of Nutrition And Wellness, we can see how symptoms become an unresourceful way of meeting these needs. For example, a chronic illness might provide Certainty (you know exactly how your day will go because you are confined to bed) or Significance (people pay attention to you and care for you).

If you are trying to heal but subconsciously relying on your symptoms to meet your core needs, you will remain stuck. The work we do with our Chris and Filly community involves finding empowering, resourceful ways to meet these needs so your body can finally let go of the burnout and symptoms.

Doing the Work: Awareness and The Reckoning

How do you start doing this work in real life? It all begins with awareness. You cannot change a pattern you cannot see. By simply reading this and considering that you are not broken, you have already initiated the first step of HealthyLiving.

As you move through your healing journey, the next phase is what we call the Reckoning. This is where you bravely look at your life, your choices, and your hidden payoffs without judgement. It is about taking radical responsibility for your well-being. This doesn't mean your burnout is your "fault," but it does mean that the power to change it rests entirely in your hands.
