Aug 25, 2026

Before we explore the deep connection between inflammation and weight loss resistance, we highly encourage you to listen to the full episode of our podcast, "176. Weight Loss Resistance, Inflammation & Food with Dr Andrea Robertson" to hear the complete, in-depth discussion and clinical wisdom.

When you are walking the path of your health journey, one of the most frustrating roadblocks you can encounter is weight loss resistance. You might be eating the “right” foods, moving your body, and trying to manage your stress, yet the scales refuse to budge, and you continually feel inflamed, puffy, and exhausted. For many people, this stubborn weight is not a sign of lacking willpower; it is a profound biological alarm bell.

At Chris and Filly Functional Medicine, we understand that symptoms like weight gain and severe fatigue are your body’s way of communicating that something is fundamentally out of balance. Today, we are exploring the critical links between inflammation, metabolic health, and weight, drawing on the immense expertise of Dr Andrea Robertson. This exploration highlights why a comprehensive approach is the only sustainable way to achieve true Health And Wellness.

Meet Dr Andrea Robertson: From the Stage to Holistic Health

Dr Andrea Robertson is an osteopath, naturopath, and nutritionist with over 25 years of clinical experience. Her journey into Alternative Medicine and Naturopathic Medicine was born from both passion and profound personal trauma. At the tender age of seven, Andrea lost her Nan and desperately tried to give her CPR. That heartbreaking moment planted a seed deep within her soul, leading to a lifelong vow to help other people heal and thrive.

However, healers often have to walk through their own fire. Alongside her clinical career, Andrea had an incredibly demanding professional dance career, even performing at the iconic Moulin Rouge in Paris. Building and running a successful allied health clinic for 15 years while pushing her physical limits eventually led to a severe crash. Her own journey through body burnout taught her that you cannot endlessly withdraw from your energetic bank account without making substantial deposits. Now, she works globally, hosting the Nourish, Heal & Rise podcast and guiding women toward Healing Naturally.

Why Undereating and Over-Exercising Will Never Work

The mainstream diet industry has conditioned us to believe a very simple, yet highly flawed equation: eat less, move more. While energy balance does play a role in human metabolism, this simplistic view completely ignores the complex hormonal landscape of the human body. When you are dealing with Ending Body Burnout, undereating and over-exercising will not only fail to help you lose weight, but they will actively make the situation worse.

The Stress Response and Your Metabolism

From the perspective of Mind Body Medicine, severe calorie restriction and punishing workouts are interpreted by your nervous system as a threat to your survival. Your body does not know you are trying to fit into a certain pair of jeans; it thinks there is a famine and you are running from a predator. In response, it floods your system with cortisol and adrenaline.

When cortisol stays elevated, your body fiercely holds onto every ounce of fat as a protective mechanism. This is where Integrative Medicine becomes essential. True Healing From Within requires us to send safety signals to the brain and nervous system. If we only look at the physical body and ignore the emotional and psychological environment, we are missing the foundation of Whole Body Health.

The Vicious Cycle: Inflammation, Insulin Resistance, and Visceral Fat

To understand weight loss resistance, we have to look closely at the biochemical environment inside the body. A core philosophy in Burnout Functional Medicine is that stubborn weight is usually a symptom of a much deeper fire: systemic inflammation.

When the body is chronically inflamed—whether from chronic stress, hidden infections, environmental toxins, or eating foods that irritate the gut lining—it disrupts insulin signalling. Insulin is a hormone responsible for ushering glucose out of your bloodstream and into your cells for energy. When you have insulin resistance, your cells stop responding to insulin's knock on the door. The body compensates by pumping out even more insulin.

What is Visceral Fat?

High levels of insulin act as a massive fat-storage hormone, particularly directing fat to be stored around your abdominal organs. This is known as visceral fat. Unlike subcutaneous fat (the soft fat under your skin), visceral fat is highly active. It acts like its own endocrine organ, pumping out even more inflammatory cytokines into your system.

Breaking the Cycle with Functional Nutrition

This creates a brutal, self-perpetuating cycle: inflammation causes insulin resistance, which creates visceral fat, which then creates more inflammation. Breaking this cycle is the primary goal of Root Cause Medicine. Through targeted Functional Nutrition, we can begin to calm the inflammatory fire, resensitise the cells to insulin, and signal to the body that it is finally safe to let go of the protective fat it has been hoarding.

Using Food as Medicine to Lower Inflammation

One of the most powerful tools you have to combat this cycle is what you put on your plate every single day. Achieving Holistic Wellness means recognising that food is not just calories; it is information. Every bite you take is instructing your genes to either up-regulate inflammation or turn it down.

To shift stubborn inflammatory weight, we must first remove the common triggers that assault the immune system and gut lining. This typically involves reducing or eliminating heavily processed foods, refined sugars, industrial seed oils, and often gluten and conventional dairy, depending on the individual. But Nutrition And Wellness is not just about restriction; it is about abundance. It is about flooding the body with nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich foods that facilitate cellular repair.

This requires cultivating what Dr Andrea calls "body wisdom"—learning to tune in to how certain foods actually make you feel, rather than just following rigid external rules. This deeply individualised approach to eating is the very essence of Personalised Medicine.

The Truth About GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications

In recent years, the landscape of weight management has been drastically altered by the introduction of GLP-1 receptor agonists—powerful weight loss medications that suppress appetite and slow gastric emptying. While these medications can produce rapid weight loss, viewing them as a magic bullet completely bypasses the principles of Preventative Health.

If you are considering or are currently using GLP-1 medications, it is absolutely vital to understand that they do not fix the root cause of your weight gain. If your weight loss resistance was driven by chronic stress, gut dysbiosis, and unhealed emotional trauma, those issues will still be there waiting for you if you ever stop the medication. Furthermore, because these drugs severely reduce appetite, there is a very high risk of malnourishment and muscle loss if you are not intentionally practising Health Optimisation.

Using Holistic Health principles means that if you choose to utilise these medications, you must simultaneously work on supporting your foundational body systems. You still need to regulate your nervous system, build muscle mass, and nourish your cells to prevent long-term metabolic damage.
