If you’ve ever felt “stuck”—knowing what you should do for your health but unable to take action—you’re not alone. This week, Chris and Filly Functional Medicine brings you a rare, raw, and real episode: a live root-cause coaching session with Chris and a courageous client, E. This conversation dives into the heart of what keeps us stuck, and how holistic health, mind body medicine, and genuine self-compassion can unlock lasting change.
Let’s break down the lessons, the healing breakthroughs, and the practical steps that help move you from managing symptoms to healing from within.
Why Knowing Isn’t Always Enough: The Real Reason We Get Stuck
You can have all the knowledge in the world about nutrition and wellness, but still find yourself blocked. E’s story is a familiar one at Chris and Filly Functional Medicine: she knows the healing practices that would help, but something inside keeps her from following through.
Chris explores why this happens—how the brain, nervous system, and unconscious beliefs can sabotage even our best intentions. It’s not laziness or lack of willpower. It’s usually a protective pattern, an old belief, or a hidden fear trying to keep us “safe.” This is the essence of root cause medicine: looking deeper than symptoms to find what’s really going on.
The Inner Tug-of-War: Realism vs. Optimism
One of the most relatable moments comes when E describes the tug-of-war between her “realistic/cautious” self and her “optimistic/hopeful” side. This inner conflict is exhausting. The cautious part wants to keep us safe, avoid disappointment, and protect us from failure. The hopeful part wants to heal, grow, and try new things.
Chris helps E see that both sides are valid—and both are trying to help. The key isn’t to “get rid” of one part, but to integrate them, creating space for authentic, sustainable change. This is a core principle in mind body medicine and holistic wellness: healing happens when we honour all parts of ourselves, not just the “good” or “motivated” bits.
Somatic Practices & Nervous System Regulation—With a Twist
Somatic practices (like breathwork, movement, and nervous system regulation) are powerful tools for healing naturally. But Chris points out a crucial step that’s often missed: these tools only work when we address the deeper beliefs and protective patterns underneath.
At Chris and Filly Functional Medicine, we call this the “Spark”—the metaphysical piece of healing that rewires your brain, nervous system, and unconscious mind. It’s about finding the stories you’ve been living by, and gently updating them so your body feels safe enough to heal.
Live Visualisation: Connecting With Your Authentic Self
A standout moment in the episode is Chris guiding E through a live visualisation. He helps her connect with her “authentic” self—the part that blends optimism and realism, hope and caution, excitement and safety. This part isn’t weighed down by old stories or inner battles; it’s spacious, peaceful, and genuinely present.
This process is at the heart of the Ending Body Burnout Method: not just managing symptoms, but rewiring your healing abilities from within. When you meet your authentic self, you create real inner peace and unlock the energy to take action.
Self-Compassion: The Missing Ingredient in Healing
True holistic health isn’t about pushing harder or being perfect—it’s about self-compassion. Chris encourages E (and all listeners) to practise gratitude for the parts of us that are just trying to keep us safe. Even our “stuckness” is a form of self-protection. When we thank these parts, rather than criticise them, we create space for integration and healing.
Self-compassion is the foundation of preventative health, healing from within, and sustainable change. It’s what allows us to move forward, not from shame or pressure, but from genuine care for ourselves.
Practical Reflection: Try This at Home
Ready to move from stuck to integrated? Here’s a simple exercise inspired by the coaching session:
- Notice Your Inner Conflict: When you feel blocked, pause and identify the different “voices” inside. What does the cautious part say? What does the hopeful part want?
- Thank Each Part: Acknowledge that both are trying to help. Say thank you to each part for its role in keeping you safe or motivated.
- Visualise Integration: Imagine these parts coming together, forming a new, authentic self that honours both caution and hope.
- Take One Tiny Step: Ask your integrated self, “What’s one small action I can take today that feels safe and hopeful?” Then do it—no matter how small.
Why Metaphysical Healing Matters
This episode is a powerful reminder that real, lasting healing goes deeper than protocols and supplements. The metaphysical “Spark” work is a critical piece that’s often missed in the health industry. By addressing deep-seated beliefs, stories, and protective patterns, you unlock your body’s natural ability to heal—creating whole body health, resilience, and true wellness.
