If you’re new to the world of Chris and Filly, welcome. And if you’re here because you’ve been told your labs are “normal” while you still feel like hot garbage… you’re exactly who this episode is for.
In this solo episode, Chris from Chris and Filly Functional Medicine lays out a roadmap for anyone who’s sick of symptom management and ready to start uncovering the real drivers of body burnout. Not just “eat cleaner” or “take magnesium” (though functional nutrition matters). This is about root cause medicine — the kind that connects the dots between your energy, mood, gut health, hormones, stress response, and the unconscious patterns that keep your nervous system stuck in survival mode.
“Normal” Labs Don’t Mean You’re Thriving
One of the most important points Chris makes is this: being told your results are “normal” doesn’t mean you’re functioning at your best. It often just means you’re not sick enough — yet — to show up as a diagnosable disease on standard testing.
In integrative medicine and burnout functional medicine, we look at function, not just disease. We ask: is your body actually operating well? Are you waking with energy? Are you thinking clearly? Are your moods stable? Is your digestion working without drama? Are you sleeping deeply? Is your cycle (if you have one) regular? Do you feel resilient — or like you’re one minor stressor away from collapsing?
This is why so many people feel dismissed in conventional settings. They’re not imagining it. They’re not being dramatic. They’re experiencing dysfunction that hasn’t yet been labelled as disease. And that’s exactly where preventative health and holistic health can be life-changing.
Why “Clean Eating” and Magnesium Can Become a Band-Aid
Chris also calls out something that can be uncomfortable to hear: sometimes “doing all the right things” is just patching things up.
Yes, cleaning up your diet can help. Yes, magnesium can support sleep and stress. But if you’re still stuck in exhaustion, anxiety, constipation, insomnia, or brain fog, those strategies might be acting like a temporary patch — not a solution.
In root cause medicine, we’re always asking: what’s driving this? What’s the underlying system that’s off? What’s the pattern that keeps repeating?
Because if the driver is still there — gut infections, immune activation, adrenal dysregulation, nutrient depletion, detox bottlenecks, nervous system hypervigilance, or chronic “busy” patterns — you can take supplements forever and still feel like you’re dragging yourself through life.
That’s not failure. That’s a sign you need a clearer map.
How Chris and Filly Turn a “Messy History” Into a Clear Picture
A lot of people arrive at Chris and Filly Functional Medicine feeling like their health story is too messy to make sense of. Symptoms that don’t match. Years of stress. Random diagnoses. A drawer full of supplements. A timeline that feels like chaos.
Chris explains that this “mess” is actually data. When you know how to look at it, patterns emerge.
Instead of treating symptoms in isolation, Chris and Filly connect the dots across your whole body health: energy, mood, gut, hormones, immune system, stress response, sleep, skin, cravings, motivation, and even your behaviour patterns. This is personalised medicine in action — not guessing, not generic advice, but a framework that helps your unique picture come into focus.
It’s also why their approach sits at the intersection of functional testing and mind body medicine. Because your body doesn’t exist separately from your life, your relationships, and your nervous system.
Moving Beyond Guesswork With Functional Testing
A big theme in this episode is moving beyond guesswork.
In alternative medicine and naturopathic medicine spaces, people often end up trying everything: different diets, elimination protocols, supplements, detoxes, fasting, biohacks. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it makes things worse. Often it creates confusion.
Chris talks about using functional testing to confirm which body systems need to be “kickstarted” and which need to be “killed off” (meaning: what needs support, and what needs removing or addressing).
That might include looking at stress hormones, gut microbiome patterns, nutrient status, detox pathways, inflammation markers, and other functional indicators that don’t always show up on standard GP panels.
The point isn’t to test for the sake of testing. The point is to get clarity. Because clarity reduces overwhelm, and it gives you a targeted plan — which is a huge part of health optimisation and healing naturally.
“The Way You Do Anything Is the Way You Do Everything”
Chris also brings in a principle that hits home for a lot of people: the way you do anything is the way you do everything.
If you rush through your day, you probably rush through meals.
If you over-responsibilise in relationships, you probably overdo it with health protocols.
If you avoid conflict, you might avoid uncomfortable truths about your lifestyle.
If you “should” yourself constantly, you might turn healing into another performance.
This is where holistic wellness becomes more than food and supplements. It becomes a way of living. A way of relating to yourself. A way of noticing patterns that repeat across your life.
And once you can see the pattern, you can change it.
Viewing Symptoms as “Loving Communication” (Not a Punishment)
One of the most powerful reframes in this episode is learning to view physical issues — like constipation, insomnia, fatigue, headaches, or anxiety — as “loving communication” from your unconscious mind.
That doesn’t mean symptoms are fun. It doesn’t mean you should tolerate them. It means they’re information.
From a mind body medicine lens, symptoms can be signals that something is out of alignment: too much pressure, too much pushing, too little rest, too little safety, too much people-pleasing, too much “must” energy.
When you treat symptoms as communication, you stop fighting your body. You start listening. And that’s often the beginning of healing from within.
Victim Speech and “Must-Debating”: The Clues Hiding in Your Language
Chris also points out how language reveals belief systems.
“Victim speech” can sound like: “I can’t.” “Nothing works.” “This always happens to me.” “I’m stuck.”
“Must-debating” can sound like: “I must do this.” “I should be better.” “I have to keep going.” (aka “should-ing all over yourself”.)
These patterns aren’t just words. They’re windows into the beliefs sitting underneath fatigue, anxiety, and burnout. They often reveal where you’re living in pressure, scarcity, fear, or self-judgement — which keeps the nervous system in a stressed state.
In holistic health, changing language isn’t about being positive. It’s about becoming aware of the internal rules you’re living by, and choosing more supportive ones.
Why True Healing Needs Both the Physical and the Metaphysical
Chris is clear: true healing requires addressing both the physical and the metaphysical together.
Physical work might include functional nutrition, gut support, stress hormone regulation, sleep support, nutrient repletion, and targeted protocols based on testing.
Metaphysical work (what Chris and Filly often refer to as the deeper “Spark” side) includes nervous system regulation, belief rewiring, identity shifts, and addressing protective patterns like perfectionism, people-pleasing, rushing, and over-responsibility.
When you only do one side, you often plateau. When you combine both, you create the conditions for real, lasting change — the kind that supports health and wellness long-term, not just short-term symptom relief.
This is the heart of the Ending Body Burnout Method: a holistic, root-root-cause system designed to help you stop managing symptoms and start rebuilding your energy, mood, and gut health from the ground up.
