00:00:57:01 - 00:01:24:09
Filly
Before we get into today's podcast, I just want to remind you. Or if this is the first time you've ever listened to our podcast, tell you that we are holding another ending body Burnout Retreat in March 2027. So this retreat is called Unmask and Shine. And it is in March at the Bay of fires bush retreat on the beautiful East coast, Tasmania at been a long bay.
00:01:24:11 - 00:01:44:22
Filly
It's still warm weather by then. In Tassie we will be at the beach for some of it, but this ending Body Burnout retreat is a three day transformational retreat to help you take off the mask and release old conditioning, beliefs and patterns that are keeping you stuck in body burnout or causing you to dim your light and stay small.
00:01:45:00 - 00:02:11:17
Filly
During this journey, you will step into your glowy and vibrant authentic self through play purpose. Finding your power and you will leave a different person feeling lighter, happier, on purpose, and lit up by your own shiny awesomeness. And I have seen this now countless times with people that have come to our retreats, leaving the retreat feeling like a different person, feeling like some deep unconscious stuff has shifted.
00:02:11:20 - 00:02:51:07
Filly
I've even seen some people with physical symptoms shift after our ending body burnout retreats. So it's three days. There'll be a combination of root cause body mind coaching, subconscious rewiring practices, somatic movement, communal singing, mantras. Transformational breathwork will also add in some creative place and silliness. And really stepping into your sovereign identity. So who you are at your core, your authentic self and this potent, amazing human inside of you.
00:02:51:09 - 00:03:12:12
Filly
There's also going to be free time to go bushwalking, to go swimming at the most glorious beaches. You can duck off for a massage. And yeah, the place that we'll be staying at has beautiful glamping bell tents. We're going to be very much immersed in nature because my experience to his nature does half of the healing for us.
00:03:12:14 - 00:03:37:14
Filly
So it's going to be a wonderful time to reset, to disconnect, and to go deep into your own personal transformation and healing and have some fun while we're at it. So you can check the show notes. Save your spot. If you do book in before the 12th of December, you get $500 off. That's our early bird discount and we have very limited spaces.
00:03:37:16 - 00:03:53:15

G'day, guys, and welcome to this episode of the Ending Body Burnout Show. I think this is 186. That's pretty cool. 186 episodes. I was reflecting on that and, well, that's nearly 200. I think that's pretty cool. There's there's not a lot of podcasts that go for 100, let alone 200 and filling. And I are about to get there.
00:04:21:05 - 00:04:51:05
Chris
And I think one of the things that Philly is really good at is she's really good at sightseeing things and breaking things down and preparing meticulous notes. One of the things that I'm not amazing at is writing things down, planning things, and making meticulous notes. Her strength is definitely my weakness, but she's also really, really, really busy this week and we have our doors open for our launch.
00:04:51:06 - 00:05:19:09
Chris
And, and so we have me, but I really want to just take a couple of logistic boxes, and I would like to let you know if you didn't know already, that on Mask and Shine Retreat is, It's on. We've got it. It's ready to go. We can't wait to to to have this retreat and be with you who are coming and for you who haven't booked your ticket yet.
00:05:19:09 - 00:05:44:01
Chris
So don't wait. There is an early bird discount of $500 when you sign up by December the 12th. So Merry Christmas or having New Year or Happy Birthday or whatever you want. Book a ticket, come hang out with Philly and I and the other beautiful souls who are coming to unmask and shine. I can tell you something, it's going to be really amazing.
00:05:44:01 - 00:06:10:10
Chris
And if you would like to have more information or you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, click the show notes down below and you can have a read about our Unmask and Shine retreat. Can't wait to see you there, but hurry up! What are you waiting for? Boogie ticket dot. Okay, so today we are going to go over a a really profound and powerful principle.
00:06:10:11 - 00:06:37:15
Chris
And this is something that we, we have in our ending body burnout method. In ending body burnout, our method, we really want to help people to, to identify where they're at right now in their life. And that's usually going to be some sort of frustrated, some sort of stuck, some sort of overwhelm, some sort of annoyed or in pain.
00:06:37:17 - 00:07:01:16
Chris
And there's going to be a, a running away from where you're at now or some sort of running to what you want. And this principle that we're going to go over today is really it's it's profound, but it's so simple. And if you don't get this, you will not end your body burnout if you don't apply this principle.
00:07:01:18 - 00:07:33:16
Chris
Healing is harder for you if you don't follow this and integrate it into your healing journey. Your relationship with yourself is going to be based on victimhood, obligation, shame, and you're setting yourself up for for frustration of failure. And a little saying that feeling that I have is ending. Body burnout is less about doing the things and ticking the boxes.
00:07:33:17 - 00:08:14:09
Chris
I mean, you still have to tick the boxes and you still have to do the things, but it's less about ticking the boxes and doing the things, and it's more about healing your relationship with yourself. And when you follow this principle that I'm going to highlight today, you start healing your relationship with yourself. So the principle of what I'm talking about is, and maybe you fast forwarded to this point, rather than drawing out the tension, the principle is taking your power back.
00:08:14:11 - 00:08:33:11
Chris
So when you take your power back, what does that even mean? We'll go over that. We'll also talk about what taking your power back isn't, and we'll talk about, agency. And I'm just going to dive right in.
00:08:33:13 - 00:08:56:06
Chris
So where do we talk about taking your power back in the ending body burnout method? So in the ending body burnout method, we talk about it right at the start. We talk about it in what we call our reckoning phase. Our reckoning module in reckoning reckoning is split up into three parts. The first part is about where you're at now.
00:08:56:06 - 00:09:13:09
Chris
The second part is how did you get here? And the third part is where do you want to go? So we call that your reckoning. It's like a life navigation. When we talk about taking your power back in reckoning, we we talk about it in terms of where are you now?
00:09:13:11 - 00:09:39:06
Chris
And when we talk about where are you now, we call that or we label that your present state. It's your now. And what is really useful in terms of healing and, ending body burnout, it's where we start to identify things that are there patterns in your life and they're not the full pack of Tim Tams. If you get me, then they're not the full bottle of us.
00:09:39:06 - 00:10:07:03
Chris
That they are not optimal. They are dysfunctional patterns. And although they're hurting you, the the the the problem is these patterns are part of you wants to run them in some sort of way. I think a large part of you wants to not run them anymore. But let's not, you know, overcook this, overshoot this mark. But you want to keep doing this.
00:10:07:06 - 00:10:19:00
Chris
You want to keep running these dysfunctional patterns. And so with that frame, that might not make any sense to you, but but think about it.
00:10:19:01 - 00:10:52:00
Chris
Okay? I'm picturing somebody who is maybe have have some sickness or sensations, maybe it's fatigued or, or some sort of gut thing or maybe even, some sort of mood stuff going on. And they've tried, they've been to the GP, they've, they've come back with blood tests that say you're normal and you walk out the door after paying your GP bill and you're scratching your head thinking, well, I don't feel normal, I don't feel right.
00:10:52:02 - 00:11:18:14
Chris
And so you jump into your car and before you drive out of the parking lot, hey, and you insert whatever your AI is, ChatGPT or Google or Siri or whatever, and you start searching, you start wondering. And that's day. Probably not day one, but that is, a milestone of you really taking your healing journey into your own hands.
00:11:18:14 - 00:11:43:19
Chris
This is you try to find out all the things, all the knowledge, and you start trying to control your destiny, start trying to control the outcome. And what that looks like in a healthy way is one thing, but in an unhealthy way it's another in a dysfunctional, unhealthy way. The possibility is for you to to become over concerned with things that are outside of your control.
00:11:43:22 - 00:12:08:09
Chris
You start worrying and stressing about about what if this and what if that, and you start trying to control the the choices that haven't even been presented to you yet, and you get health anxiety and you start worrying, you become stressed about what may be. And so I'm going to tell you that you want to run that pattern.
00:12:08:11 - 00:12:41:06
Chris
Maybe not all of you, but you want to be worried and and certain and controlling. Because what if you don't? The GP is not going to help you. Didn't help you and X, y, Z hasn't helped. So it must be up to me, you say, and and so therefore a part of you wants to run this pattern, but you're worried about outcomes that are out of your control.
00:12:41:08 - 00:12:44:16
Chris
You become a.
00:12:44:18 - 00:13:11:04
Chris
A slave to circumstance. You become the, the, the circumstances and the things that are happening. Control how you feel. It's like, if I don't have the answer, then I'm not okay. And you can always there's a little test that you can run. I'm okay. If I have the answer, I'm okay if I'm not or if I don't, I'm okay if this happens, I'm okay if it doesn't happen.
00:13:11:06 - 00:13:38:13
Chris
And I bet you a million bucks monopoly money that you're not okay if you don't have the answer and you're not okay if you don't get the thing. And so therefore you're giving your power away to that outcome. You see, so when you are giving your power away, you become a victim to the thing or a slave to the circumstance.
00:13:38:15 - 00:14:02:04
Chris
It control, it controls you is what you think, because you're not okay if you don't have the thing or or something like that. Does it make sense? So the first step in this drama that you found yourself in is to to take your power back, to realise not, hey, you have agency, but you only can control so much.
00:14:02:06 - 00:14:11:18
Chris
There's some stuff that that is outside of your control. And so taking your power back looks like this.
00:14:11:20 - 00:14:42:17
Chris
One. There are some things that you can control, and there are some things that you can't just if you're wondering what in the biscuit I'm talking about, just brainstorm some things. What are some things you have no control over? What are some things that you do have control over? And some things are kind of this grey in between where you've got influence, for example, are I have influence over.
00:14:42:19 - 00:15:08:23
Chris
I have influence over my, my dog in so much that I can call her and I can tell her to not bark at the neighbours. And I'm saying this because I'm literally looking at my window at my dog, who is a distressed because the neighbour's dog is barking. I don't know if that's coming up in the recording. I have influence over Mindy, but I cannot control her.
00:15:09:01 - 00:15:38:02
Chris
Her choices are her own little dog choices. Another one, my daughter. I can influence things by either purchasing them or allowing them or, you know, this sort of thing. Teaching her, guiding her. But I cannot control how she behaves. And I bring that up because on the weekend. This is very much installed into me because we had an interaction on a drive home.
00:15:38:04 - 00:16:06:23
Chris
And it was just very clear that I, I can't control everything and I can't control other people's thoughts, feelings, words and actions, but I can influence them. And so when you take your power back, you start realising. I can only control myself. I can't even control the outcome. I can influence it, but I can't control it.
00:16:07:01 - 00:16:41:22
Chris
And so when you try to become obsessed and you have this predisposition of outcomes and you really stress about it and worry about it, you give your power away to the thing, to that outcome. So when you take your power back, you kind of zoom back into you and your thoughts, your emotions and feelings, the words, language that you you speak or that you think and your actions, behaviours, habits, all that sort of stuff.
00:16:42:02 - 00:16:47:01
Chris
That's it. That's all you can control. You.
00:16:47:03 - 00:17:07:12
Chris
And I'm not sure if my dog is being picked up in this recording, but it's actually kind of I hope she kind of does a little bit. Not because it's pleasurable to hear, but it makes it's the theme of this podcast I can't control and I can't control or what can I control, what kind of control, blah blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:17:07:13 - 00:17:12:05
Chris
So if you hear her barking,
00:17:12:07 - 00:17:41:00
Chris
You and I both can't control that. But what can I control? I can control the post recording compression, and I can do some things and, my actions, you know, but I can't ultimately stop her from barking. Does that make sense? Right. Here's another one. Sometimes people give their power away by obsessing about, outcome resolution. For example.
00:17:41:02 - 00:18:06:01
Chris
I need to be. Or I want to be, or I have to be symptom free by x, y, z, z. And and so that is in a sense you might think, no, no, I am, I am, but I believe it's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah I get it. But.
00:18:06:03 - 00:18:28:21
Chris
Let's focus on what you can control. Belief is great, but let's not let's not pull the wool over your eyes. Let's let's be clear on what what is in your control. This is later on down the track, we'll get into affirmations and beliefs and that sort of stuff. But for right now, just focus on what you can do and what you can be and what you can have.
00:18:28:23 - 00:19:00:21
Chris
Your thoughts, your feelings, your words and actions. Don't place these controlling circumstances of I will be symptom free, or I need to be symptom free by X, y, z date because you can't control that. But you can control the steps in between the processes, the daily choices, the habits.
00:19:00:23 - 00:19:18:04
Chris
What time you wake up. What do you feed yourself with? Both through your mouth, through your eyeballs? Etc. so that's another way that you can take your power back.
00:19:18:06 - 00:19:24:09
Chris
All right. I got a little thing I like to call it.
00:19:24:11 - 00:19:28:15
Chris
When I played basketball, I.
00:19:28:17 - 00:20:01:02
Chris
I got I, I wasn't an awesome shooter, but but I wasn't the worst either. And I think what was important is repetition and practice and breaking things down into the little steps. When I was playing basketball, there's some technical things that make it more possible for me to get the the shot in, and I could practice all those things and do all the, do all the stuff, tick all the boxes, as I said before, but,
00:20:01:04 - 00:20:21:12
Chris
I'm not going to say relationship because I've already talked about that, but this one is it's really hard to, to, to hit a basket when you don't am. And so if you want to achieve a goal, if you want to have an outcome, you got to aim.
00:20:21:14 - 00:20:36:23
Chris
All right. So first thing to do is to be aware that you might be spiralling or descending into this dysfunctional pattern of giving your power away.
00:20:37:01 - 00:21:14:14
Chris
So the first part is of aim is to be aware. I am aware I am doing a thing. I am focusing on something outside of my power. I am aware that I am feeling something, and sometimes you might even get stuck into a spiral of you've got thoughts and feelings about your thoughts and feelings. You know, you get stuck in that little matrix spiral there, and so you're aware that at the core, you're you're predisposition and your focus is on things that are out of your power.
00:21:14:15 - 00:21:25:20
Chris
So the awareness that's the first part of of aim. The second part is.
00:21:25:22 - 00:21:35:18
Chris
Intention. Once you're aware that you're giving your power away, once you're aware that you are.
00:21:35:20 - 00:22:02:03
Chris
You're you're outsourcing your your responsibility and your power, all that sort of stuff. You're focusing on the uncontrollable. You have an opportunity. A door is open for you. It's like, well, now you're aware you can do something about it. You can have an intention at the start of this game. It's called Mortal Kombat. I don't know if anybody, a 90s baby or anybody else.
00:22:02:05 - 00:22:22:01
Chris
This is a very. Yeah. Oh, okay. I played Mortal Kombat when I was a kid. I haven't played it for a long time, but I have seen the movies recently. So anyway, at the start there was this little quote knowledge is power. And I think that's kind of true.
00:22:22:03 - 00:22:50:04
Chris
But, you know, once you once you become aware that you are giving your power away, that's great, but you need to do something about it. So take your power back. I think that's the next step of that Mortal Kombat question. Quote. So you're aware now what are you going to do about it? What's your intention? How are you going to bring bring your focus within your control?
00:22:50:04 - 00:23:26:00
Chris
Steven. Our Covey has this way of thinking about it. He has a model of anxiety. It's where you're focussed on things that are outside of your control. And he's got like two circles, and he also has a model of power where you shrink your focus to within that which you can control. And it's a real simplified way of thinking about it, but it helps me to when I'm overwhelmed or when I'm, worried or, stressed or something like that, I can just take a pause and be like, right, I'm giving my power away.
00:23:26:02 - 00:23:59:10
Chris
Where, why, how, when all this sort of stuff and I can then make an intention. Here's another way of thinking about an intention. You make a decision, you decide. What does decide mean. So side is, in in language. It's in words like homicide to to kill a person. Frack decide to kill family or friends or whatever. Or if you're playing another computer game, Halo, it's where you kill your team-mate.
00:23:59:12 - 00:24:33:17
Chris
Genocide. Kill a race of of people or someone from a certain race. So side is to cut or to kill. So when we decide we eliminate choices, we decide we we separate all that sort of stuff. We become in tension. We say, these are the things I'm going to focus on, not that stuff. I'm just going to focus on this.
00:24:33:19 - 00:25:12:00
Chris
All right. And the last part of the aim metaphor, not metaphor acronym is mindfulness. So once you're aware, you're giving your power away and you've made an intention, I choose to do this, do that, have this, focus on that, be this, be that. Then it's being mindful throughout the day, being mindful of being a certain way, being mindful as you go into situations, times and places, environment, people and relationships that you are being how you want to be because you've made a decision with your intention.
00:25:12:03 - 00:25:41:22
Chris
And now it's about being mindful of that throughout the day. And that might need some some rewiring of thought patterns and stories and beliefs in which then you can do that. But it also might include little reminders, affirmations. It could involve post-it notes. It could involve quotes on your on your phone. It could involve having conversations with other people.
00:25:41:22 - 00:26:18:08
Chris
It could involve habits. And James Clear in his book Atomic Habits, he he talks about, if we want to break a habit, make doing the thing harder. If we want to create a new habit, make that new pathway easier. So something that you can do while you're being mindful of this new way of being is make it easier for yourself and to make it harder for you to to do other things.
00:26:18:08 - 00:26:24:01
Chris
So for example.
00:26:24:03 - 00:27:00:11
Chris
You might find it hard to focus on yourself and what you can control and not have your thoughts out there when you're in a particular state, when you're in a. And by that I mean your physiology is in a certain way, maybe when you're tired or you're hungry or, or or perhaps feeling like your symptoms are really flaring up or being loud, you know, so perhaps to make it easier for you to, to think about stuff that's in your control.
00:27:00:13 - 00:27:40:00
Chris
One example might be a little ritual of calming, a little ritual of slowing down, a little ritual of breath. Perhaps it could be a little ritual of softening and relaxing and leaning into the the discomfort in the sensation, not to make it more or worse, but to to notice the waves as it comes in and comes out. And I want to do a little thing with you now.
00:27:40:02 - 00:28:05:02
Chris
And so if you were to spot or notice something in your body that's maybe making a communication to you, it's like, hey, listen to me, listen to me, look at me, look at me, feel me, notice me. Pause the video, pause the recording, and just bring that up.
00:28:05:04 - 00:28:15:13
Chris
So I've got something in your mind. And just a real simple leaning in practice would be take a deep breath.
00:28:15:15 - 00:28:18:06
Chris
Hold.
00:28:18:08 - 00:28:23:10
Chris
And slowly breathe out.
00:28:23:12 - 00:28:30:00
Chris
And that's one. Let's do it again. Take a deep breath in.
00:28:30:02 - 00:28:33:01
Chris
Hold it.
00:28:33:03 - 00:28:37:18
Chris
And let it all out.
00:28:37:20 - 00:28:44:23
Chris
That's two three to go. Take a big deep breath in.
00:28:45:01 - 00:28:48:07
Chris
Hold it.
00:28:48:09 - 00:28:53:08
Chris
And let it go.
00:28:53:10 - 00:29:00:11
Chris
That's three. Two to go. Take a big deep breath in.
00:29:00:13 - 00:29:03:18
Chris
Hold it.
00:29:03:20 - 00:29:09:01
Chris
And then just let it go.
00:29:09:03 - 00:29:16:16
Chris
That's for one more. Breathe in.
00:29:16:18 - 00:29:19:14
Chris
Hold it.
00:29:19:16 - 00:29:25:14
Chris
And then just let it go.
00:29:25:16 - 00:29:54:15
Chris
And that's a practice. When I practice basketball I would try and practice something like it might be flicking my my wrist at the right time when I'm, when I'm extending my arm, when I'm releasing the ball off my fingertips. Or I might focus on catching the ball with the right part of my fingertips. Or it might be being on the on on a more optimal part of my balance and my feet.
00:29:54:15 - 00:30:22:22
Chris
And I would intentionally practice and be mindful of that thing while I'm while I'm practising. And so those five slow breaths are a practice for you to both be with the communication from your body and with the breath, and to to allow the breath to be there, not to suppress the symptom and the communication, but to be there with it.
00:30:23:00 - 00:30:49:20
Chris
And then you can have this part of you, this petitioning of your, of your focus, of noticing that there is the communication you're in, you're in control of that, but you're also in control of your breathing as well. This is just a very simple practice of focusing on what you can control. And I don't know if you know anything else that's more portable than your breath.
00:30:49:22 - 00:31:06:02
Chris
You take it with you everywhere. Even when you go overseas, you take your breath with you. Even when you're asleep and you're not even thinking about it. Not consciously anyway. You bring your breath with you. So that's a nifty little tool.
00:31:06:04 - 00:31:14:20
Chris
That you're always with until you die. Apparently, I think.
00:31:14:22 - 00:31:17:01
Chris
Maybe I'll delete that bit. Nah.
00:31:17:03 - 00:31:50:04
Chris
Yeah, you're you have your breath with you all the time. And so sometimes when you feel like you are receiving loud communication from your body, you know, it's almost like a there's a little dog barking, right, right, right, right. It's not entirely pleasurable. That sharp bark from your stomach or your your knee or your back or your your skin or whatever it is.
00:31:50:06 - 00:32:20:00
Chris
Some I was talking to someone with endometriosis, and I don't have a uterus. And I, I don't specifically know what that feels like for for her, but I do know what discomfort. And I do know what, sharp, crampy feelings are. And you might say that's not what it feels like. Chris, you don't understand. Yeah, I 100%, obviously, but I do know what pain feels like.
00:32:20:00 - 00:32:41:14
Chris
And I do know what discomfort. And I do know what meaning I give to that. And so, when you focus on when you focus on the things that are outside of your control, that's another pain of your making.
00:32:41:16 - 00:33:00:06
Chris
That you add on to the discomfort of the barking of the communication. So when you take your power back, that involves you focusing on things that you can actually do something about. And one action is the breath.
00:33:00:08 - 00:33:22:06
Chris
So another little thing that you can do is to start focusing or sorry, start looking at your stresses, the the stuff that's happening around you. You start noticing your communication one one little.
00:33:22:08 - 00:33:53:15
Chris
Thing that you might notice yourself saying is he makes me or she makes me, or they make me, or it makes me, an insert. What? You what you think that they're making you feel or do, for example. Endometriosis. Going back to that, it makes me feel, the pain and the the the thing, the the the the the sharpness, the that sort of thing.
00:33:53:17 - 00:34:15:01
Chris
It makes me this. It makes me that. And I think when you take your power back, there's a really important distinction that that needs to happen. And it's instead of only focusing on the.
00:34:15:02 - 00:34:18:18
Chris
Not only.
00:34:18:20 - 00:34:42:07
Chris
So like instead of focusing only on the, the annoyance or the the discomfort. So it makes me feel so frustrated or it makes me feel so much in pain. Something that you can do is focus on the specific qualities so it it feels and now label the sensations. It feels like a sharp stabbing, crampy.
00:34:42:09 - 00:34:44:07
Chris
Blah blah blah blah blah.
00:34:44:09 - 00:35:08:20
Chris
And then you can think about, all right, and what do I make that mean? What's my meaning about that? Well, I'm making that mean that that's annoying okay. And it might be no doubt, but, you know, in the same sort of way that my dog barking is kind of a little bit annoying, I think, but not everybody. So therefore this is a crisis.
00:35:08:20 - 00:35:21:13
Chris
You so label the sensation with specificity. It is sharp. It is stabby. It's it's twisty. It's it's left side, right side under side, you know, blah.
00:35:21:13 - 00:35:21:21
Chris
Blah blah.
00:35:21:21 - 00:36:00:23
Chris
Blah blah. Get specific. And what is it? What do I make it mean? I'm making it mean that that's bad or it's it's a it's not good or it's, And you label that and I'm not saying that you change that, but just start to notice that you are in control of that labelling. Maybe not so much the actual outcome of the the system, the things on on one's ovaries or, or if you pick another pain, that pain, you know, you might not be able to control them that specific outcome in that moment anyway.
00:36:01:01 - 00:36:32:00
Chris
But you can take ownership and control your labelling. And sometimes you can say to yourself, I'm, I'm I'm not I'm not enjoying my experience. No, you're not cool. What are you going to what what are some steps that you can do about it. Because you can't change the outcome, but you can take steps.
00:36:32:02 - 00:37:00:02
Chris
This is taking your power back. And now do you see why it's hard, if not impossible, to heal when you don't do this? Because healing involves a relationship with yourself more so than ticking boxes. So if you aren't, if you aren't focusing on what you can control and you're out there, you're ignoring yourself to a degree. So take your power back.
00:37:00:04 - 00:37:10:04
Chris
Be with yourself, your thoughts, your feelings, your words, your actions. And,
00:37:10:06 - 00:37:31:09
Chris
